APPLICATION FOR OFF-LINE FILE TAGGING FOR
THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOR AND THE INFORMATION SHOP
First, I would like to thank DAVE JONES, SYSOP of The Wonderful
World of Color at FT Campbell, KY and FRENCHY LEFAVOUR, SYSOP of the
Information Shop in Clarksville, TN for their help to make this idea
a reality. I'm not trying to give the impression that I have created
anything new, perhaps with the exception of a new way to combine sev-
eral existing programs to suit a good use. I could go on and on with
the thank you's for the people who wrote all this fine software, etc.
I will go on record as highly recommending all of the programs I make
reference to in this letter.
Next, you need some programs to make this plan come together and
placed on your hard drive in locations as described in the following
text. You need:
TSRWORKS.ZIP TSR utilities programs
CAPTURE.ZIP .SLT for TELIX saving a log by BBS name
TAGGER35.ZIP TAGGER v 3.5 Program
LIST72A.ZIP LIST.COM v 7.2
MYFILES.ZIP All the files I have referenced below
and I highly recommend (if not using already!)
TLX312-1.ZIP The TELIX v 3.12 Program
TLX312-2.ZIP "
TLX312-3.ZIP "
TLX312-4.ZIP (use your own conscious!)
I modified this application to my Telix v3.12 set-up but it works
with any modem program that is recommended in the Tagger v3.5 files.
Since I was using Tagger with Telix, I needed a new hot-key since ALT_Z
was used already for the help menu so I used the SET TAGKEY=081c in my
AUTOEXEC.BAT making ALT_ENTER my hot-key. All the major work has been
done to be able to keep an up to date capture of the BBS using very little
on-line time while using TELIX. If you use another modem program, you may
need to do some more work. If you haven't already put your SET [MODEM PROG
NAME]=[full path to it's directory] it is highly recommended you do so.
I set up CAPTURE.SLT for my applications(sample enclosed) and then
compiled it with CS.EXE and put the .SLC in my \TELIX sub-directory. I
created a \LOGS sub-directory and went on-line to The WWOC and used my
defined (in my case F12) hot-key to create a new log called THE_WWOC.CAP
and entered the files directories and listed them all. This .CAP file was
done on 23 Feb 90 and a copy is included with the other files in this
"software application packet". I closed the log and logged off the WWOC.
I repeated the same procedure for The Information Shop to create a new log
called THE_INFO.CAP in the \LOG sub-directory and again logged off. I now
have the complete file listing of both BBS'. The capture file naming is
keyed off the name that is entered in the line that is dialed from the
dialing directory. If any spaces appear in the first eight characters of
the name they are replaced with the "_" symbol. My dialing directory sel-
ection for David Jones BBS is "THE WWOC (Dave Jones)" and my file that
is created by the CAPTURE hot-key being activated is "THE_WWOC.CAP" and
is placed in \TELIX\LOGS sub-directory. Incidently, it will not be over-
written by activating it a second time, it appends the new data to the end
of the existing file.
END OF PAGE ONE
Now to set up for Tagger, I simply put TAGGER.EXE in my \UTILITY sub-
directory which is in my path statement. It took a good bit of modi-
fication to make the GETFILES.BAT to work for this method of off-line
tagging and you will see within it that I have "MARKED" the TAGGER.EXE"
prior to execution in order to "RELEASE" it on the way out of the batch.
Set up your file paths within GETFILES.BAT to suit your own directories.
As you can see that LIST.COM, MARK.COM, & RELEASE.COM are used in this batch
and must be in your DOS PATH statement. (Mine are also in the \UTILITY sub-
directory). I put the GETFILES.BAT in my \BAT sub-directory which is also in
my DOS PATH.
Since I use AUTOMENU for a Menu System, I am also including the two
.MDF files that I use on my system for Communications (see COMMO.MDF &
COMMO2.MDF). This will show you how I run the Tagger applications on-line
on COMMO.MDF and initiate off-line on COMMO2.MDF to save on-line time.
Try this out by running one of the batch files on COMMO2.MDF If you
use AUTOMENU already, you can just add an @commo.mdf command to one of
your existing line numbers and change the @manager.mdf on my file to match.
With the GETFILES.BAT I have in essense activated TAGGER to LIST the
appropriate .CAP file for the BBS I plan to down-load from and can
tag all the files I plan to get. When I exit the LIST program, it calls
up TELIX with TAGGER still active and can go to the files, select D for
DOWN-LOAD, and hit your TAGGER Hot-key, then a "/" for a single file.
Move up and down the file list to highlight the desired file and hit a
"-" then "ENTER" and the tagged file name will appear in File #1 and repeat
the process until they are all on the download batch. Hit your blank file
name carriage return and commence your download procedures. If an abort
should occur, you will have to start over only from the download procedure
since TAGGER is a TSR program you still have all the file names tagged.
I hope this method will be useful to you in cutting your on-line
time and if it is useful, I hope you spread this technique far and wide.
